Current Volunteer / Internship Opportunities:

Patient Support Volunteer

As a Patient Support Volunteer at the Merced Cancer Center, you’ll provide invaluable non-medical assistance to patients in the infusion treatment area. Your role includes:

Offering comfort and companionship with a listening ear and a smile
Providing light refreshments, blankets, and pillows
Assisting the nursing staff as needed

This position is based at the El Portal Comprehensive Cancer Center clinic, with volunteer shifts tailored to the clinic’s needs. We ask for a minimum commitment of three hours per week for six months.

Client Communication Specialist

As a Client Communication Specialist, you’ll play a key role in supporting applicants through the online grant application process. Your responsibilities will include:

Answering telephone calls and documenting voice mail messages
Returning phone calls to address applicant questions

Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially welcome. This is an in-person position only.

Join Our Special Event Committee

As a Special Event Committee Member, you’ll play a vital role in the success of MCS Foundation events. Your contributions will include:

Day-of Planning and Preparation: Help with setting up, registration, and clean-up to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Pre-Event Opportunities: Join event committees, solicit prospective sponsors and auction donations, and prepare event decorations.

Internship Opportunities | Client Services Support Intern

Our internship program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students seeking nonprofit experience. College credit is required.

Client Services Support Intern: Assist with reviewing and processing patient grant applications to determine eligibility. This role involves working with applicants via telephone or email and performing data entry tasks. Ideal candidates are team-oriented, detail-focused, and possess strong communication, multi-tasking, and organizational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Adobe is required. A commitment of at least 12 hours per week for three months is necessary.

Volunteer Application Process

Participate in a phone interview
Undergo a criminal history check
Attend Volunteer Orientation & Clinic Training at the assigned MCS clinic
Submit an influenza vaccine verification (required annually from October 1st to March 31st)

Volunteer Requirements

Complete a phone interview
Undergo a criminal history check and drug/nicotine screening
Health screening: TB testing and immunizations for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella (or approved exemption) are required for Patient Support Volunteers
Virtual or Client Services (in-office) volunteers do not need to complete the health screening
Annual influenza vaccine (August 1 through March 31)
Commit to a minimum of three hours per week for at least six months
Must be 18 years or older
We cannot accommodate patients currently undergoing cancer treatment or those needing court-ordered community service
